Library of Congress

The Library of Congress is the larges library in the world.  It was founded in 1800 but it was housed in the Capitol building at first.  After the core collection was destroyed in 1814 by a fire, a purchase of Thomas Jefferson's personal library established the foundation of the collection.  This imposing front entrance leads to a building which was created by contributions from 50 American sculptors, painters and mosaic artists.  The architecture alone is worth the visit.... if you can squeeze in time for a walking tour, even better!
